4 × 2 inch GHS label template

The most common chemical label size in the United States and the one most packs of blank GHS labels come in: ten to a Letter sheet, 101.6 × 50.8 mm. It suits jerrycans, one-gallon bottles, and above all secondary containers — the spray bottle and the wash bottle that get relabelled every time they are refilled.

What this size is for

The most common chemical label size in the United States and the one most packs of blank GHS labels come in: ten to a Letter sheet, 101.6 × 50.8 mm. Where it runs out of room is a full supplier label with four pictograms and six precautionary statements. At that point the type has to shrink below comfortable reading size, and the answer is a larger format rather than a smaller font — try 5 × 3½ in or 4 × 4 in.

02 · Where it qualifies

Against the CLP size tiers

CLP Annex I Table 1.3 is the only legally binding table tying label size to container capacity. It applies in the European Union and, word for word, in Great Britain. OSHA and WHMIS set no numeric minimum at all, so this table is guidance rather than a requirement in those two.

Container Table 1.3 label size Pictogram side This format
≤ 3 L 52 × 74 mm — if possible 16 mm ~ enough area
> 3–50 L 74 × 105 mm 23 mm
> 50–500 L 105 × 148 mm 32.2 mm
> 500 L 148 × 210 mm 46 mm

Read the two wordings apart: for packages over 3 litres Table 1.3 says “at least”, and the format qualifies only when both dimensions are met — in either orientation, since the table gives a pair of dimensions and never says which one is the width. For packages not exceeding 3 litres it says “if possible, at least 52 × 74”, which is a target rather than a minimum; a 4 × 2 in label is 1.2 mm under on the short side while carrying half again the area, so it is marked “~ enough area” — our assessment, not a compliance statement. Table 1.3 says nothing about label area at all. The pictogram column does combine two real rules: the side from Table 1.3 and the “at least one fifteenth of the minimum label area, never below 1 cm²” requirement of Annex I §1.2.1, whichever is larger.

Frequently asked

Which Avery product is 4 × 2 inches?

Avery 60505 and 60525 in the UltraDuty chemical-resistant range, and Avery 5163 in the standard white shipping-label range. Avery prints the size as “2 x 4” because it lists height before width. Presta 94207 and OnlineLabels OL3540 and OL125 share the same geometry.

How many 4 × 2 labels fit on a sheet?

Ten, in two columns of five, on a US Letter sheet. The tool lays the label out at that pitch automatically when you choose the sheet export.

Is 4 × 2 in big enough for a CLP label?

For a package up to 3 litres, yes on area: CLP Annex I Table 1.3 asks for at least 52 × 74 mm, and 101.6 × 50.8 mm is larger in area though shorter on one side. Above 3 litres the tier requires at least 74 × 105 mm and this format no longer qualifies.
