SDS emergency telephone numbers by country

Section 1.4 of a safety data sheet carries an emergency telephone number. Below are the official poison centres and national helplines we could read in each country, what the country’s own sources say about using them in section 1.4, and where every number comes from.

26 countries · 53 lines Last checked 15 October 2026 Official sources only

How to read this page

  • The rule for each country. Each country starts with what its official sources say about the number in section 1.4, with a link and the date we read it.
    Poison-centre number allowed
The poison centre’s number can be used in section 1.4, usually under conditions such as notification or an agreement; see the note.
    National number named
An official source names a national body or number for section 1.4. Whether using it is mandatory differs by country; see the note.
    No rule found
No official page was found that sets a rule for the emergency number in section 1.4. This reports what we could read, not that no rule exists.
    Own number required
The supplier must state its own emergency number; a national poison-centre number alone does not meet the rule.
    Rule for transport papers
The rule found applies to dangerous-goods transport papers, not to section 1.4 of a safety data sheet.
  • “For section 1.4” on each line. How the service itself, or the official source, relates the line to safety data sheets.
    Agreement needed
The service offers its number for safety data sheets only under an agreement or after notification; ask the service.
    Named for section 1.4
The source names this service or number for use in section 1.4 of safety data sheets.
    Public line
A line open to the public. The source does not say the number may be used in a safety data sheet.
    Listed in an official register
The number is listed in an official register of poison centres. The source does not say whether it may be named in a safety data sheet.
    Line for health professionals
A line the service prints for health professionals.
    Reporting line
Takes reports of releases; it gives no product or medical advice.
  • The check label on each number.
    Confirmed
The number was read on an official page of the service or its authority.
Official source, may be out of date
The number comes from an official page that is old or carries no date.
  • Before you print a number on a safety data sheet. Numbers change. Open the source page next to the number, and ask the service whether it agrees to be named in section 1.4. This page is a reading aid, not legal advice.

Austria

Poison-centre number allowed. Chemicals Act (ChemG 1996) section 25(4), consolidated version of 15 October 2026: the safety data sheet must be in German and, for products placed on the market in Austria, section 1.4 must name an emergency information service that answers in German round the clock. The text does not name the Poisons Information Centre (VIZ). The Environment Agency helpdesk names the VIZ as an option for firms that cannot run their own service; the VIZ offers its number under a paid agreement whose annual fee depends on the number of safety data sheets. An earlier version of the Act, in force until July 2018, required the VIZ number; the current version does not.

Belgium

National number named. The Belgian Poison Centre says in its own FAQ (18 July 2025) that the number of an official advisory body is given in section 1.4 where one exists in the Member State of supply, that it fills this role for Belgium, and names its public number for that section, free and open round the clock. No Belgian government text on an own-number or language requirement was found; the health ministry pages could not be read.

Croatia

No rule found. The 2009 rulebook on the content of safety data sheets, which said section 1.4 should give the company number and/or that of the competent official advisory body, was repealed by the Chemicals Act (Official Gazette 18/2013), which says a safety data sheet must be completed as Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 prescribes. No separate Croatian rule on the emergency number in section 1.4 was found. The page of the Croatian Institute of Public Health says a safety data sheet must be entirely in Croatian and describes a separate Croatian filing with a fee.

National number named. The Department of Labour Inspection says suppliers must put the Cyprus Poison Centre number in section 1.4 for products on the Cyprus market; the number is free and for health or medical emergencies only. The Greek-language safety data sheet must be uploaded with each notification. Czechia

Poison-centre number allowed. Ministry of Health guidance (version of 20 April 2021) says the Toxicological Information Centre (TIS) is the Czech body that receives hazardous-mixture information and recommends that suppliers list its contact details in safety data sheets; it is not a mandatory own-number rule. A 2015 presentation of the National Institute of Public Health says that where a Member State has an official advisory body its number is stated, that the number is for threats to life and health only, and that the text must be in Czech (older source).

Rule for transport papers. Shipping papers for hazardous materials (49 CFR 172.604): the number must be monitored the whole time the material is in transport; the person answering must know the material or have immediate access to someone who does; call-back services such as answering machines or pagers do not meet the requirement; if an emergency response information provider is used, the papers show the registrant's name or contract number.
